Otter had a great time visiting Old Town San Diego. This is a place that shows what San Diego was like when it was just starting out as a town. There was lots of cool information about the start of San Diego.
The town of San Diego got its start after the relationship with the local Indians was established and things in the area were pretty peaceful. People began moving out of the fortress and building houses closer to their plots of land they were farming. This began in the 1820’s around the area that Old Town San Diego is in today. San Diego moved from being a military fort to an official town in 1834.
The place that is now known as Old Town San Diego was not the best location for a city to grow. For the next 50 years it had very little growth. It was several miles away from water making it difficult to get products to the town. In 1867 a man saw the potential in San Diego but decided to move its location closer to the water. This was the site that was known as New San Diego.
Many people began to move to New San Diego or downtown and the city began to grow. Old town San Diego began to go decline as people moved out to go to downtown. In 1885 the railroad reached San Diego and that was when it really began to boom and become a big town.
Otter enjoyed his visit to Old Town. He can’t wait to share more of his trip to Old Town.
