An aircraft carrier is a water vessel that is used for carrying aircraft and as a floating runway for the airplanes.  They are used in areas where there is no place on land available for the aircraft to land.  As you might imagine, these vessels had to be pretty big to be able to put several aircraft on it.  It is so big you could have three football games all playing at the same time!

During WWII there were about 3000 crew members on the Lexington.  That is about the size of a small town!  There had to be enough beds and food to handle all those people on the ship in the middle of an ocean.  The ship is like a small town.  There is a barber shop, a cafeteria, bunk rooms, a store, and a small medical clinic to meet the needs of the three thousand people living on the carrier.
