When you visit the USS Lexington there is a lot to see. It is big and when we went we split our visit up in to two days just so we could take our time to explore every nook and cranny of the carrier.
The entrance to the carrier is on the hangar deck. The hangar deck is where the planes were stored when not in use. On this level you see the ship’s bell, WWII aircraft, missiles, and the theater is also on this deck. The mess is also here. That is where you can eat.
On the second level of the carrier is a Pearl Harbor exhibit. This exhibit was pretty cool because it included props from the movie Pearl Harbor. Also on the second level you will find Junior Officers’ quarters and Officers’ quarters. From this you are able to have an idea of what it was like for the officers living on the Lexington.
On the lower decks you could see on display the chapel, crew’s galley(kitchen), dental clinic, and sick bay. Sick Bay is like a hospital on the carrier. Also on the lower deck is a POW Exhibit. The USS Lexington was instrumental in the rescue of the POWs from Japan at the end of WWII.
On top of the carrier, or on the flight deck, you are able to see aircraft, anti aircraft guns, and the navigation bridge. We spent a lot of time on the flight deck. Being up close to those planes is pretty amazing. Looking out over the water from way up in the navigation bridge is also a fun thing to do.
The USS Lexington did not disappoint. There was a lot to do, see, and learn. It was a worthwhile trip. One we will probably make again.
